What is the role of an Education Committee member?

The Education Committees’ role is to give recommendations and advice to the school administrators and the School Board (School Principals and Vice-Principals, Center Directors, Human Resources Managers) regarding various matters related to education and the hiring of school employees.

As an Education Committee member, do I receive a salary from the school board?

You will receive an honorarium of $130.00/month, no matter how many meetings you attend or organize in a month. For example: during one month, you might need to attend two meetings only, and five meetings in the next month. The honorarium stays the same.

If there are no meetings at all during a month (because members don’t attend), the honorarium is not paid for that month.

How many meetings will I have to participate in?

The Education Committee meets at least once a month, but there is no limitation to the number of meetings. The number and frequency of meetings depends on the urgency and type of issues that the school has to manage.

Who can run for a seat with the Education Committee?

Anyone (beneficiary and non-beneficiary) who has been a resident of the community for the past 12 months or more, and who is 18 years old or more.

I am not 18 years old yet, but I am a parent. Can I run for a seat on the Education Committee?

No, you have to be at least 18 years old.

I am not a beneficiary, can I run for a seat on the Education Committee?

Yes, but only if you have resided in the community for at least the past 12 months.

How long is the mandate of an Education Committee member?

2 years.

How many members sit on the Education Committee?

It depends on the size of the community. For each community, here are the number of members:

• Akulivik: 6 members
• Aupaluk: 5 members
• Inukjuak: 8 members
• Ivujivik: 5 members
• Kangiqsualujjuaq: 7 members
• Kangiqsujuaq: 6 members
• Kangirsuk: 6 members
• Kuujjuaq: 8 members
• Kuujjuaraapik: 7 members
• Puvirnituq: 8 members
• Quaqtaq: 5 members
• Salluit: 7 members
• Tasiujaq: 5 members
• Umiujaq: 5 members

How are the committee’s president and vice-president elected?

They are elected by the other members when the committee meets for the first time. The Center Director organizes the nomination.

I am not a beneficiary. Can I vote?

Yes. To have the right to vote, you must:

• Have reached the age of majority (18 years and over);
• Have resided in the municipality for at least the past 12 months;
• Be a Canadian citizen;
• Be registered on the electoral list.

I am not 18 years old. Can I vote?

No, you have to be 18 years old and over.

I am a beneficiary, but I don’t live in Nunavik. Can I vote and where can I vote?

You cannot vote. The Education Committee is a local governance body for which elections are held only in Nunavik.

I will not be in Nunavik on election day. Can I vote ahead of time?

No, you can’t vote ahead of time. But you can appoint someone to vote for you. To do so, you must complete and sign a form before the election day. Contact your Center Director to get a copy of this form.
