Another successful start to the school year for Nunavik Sivunitsavut
Since 2017, Nunavimmiut have had the unique opportunity to complete a one-year post-secondary program dedicated to studying Inuit and circumpolar history, politics, governance, culture, and language.
Nunavik Sivunitsavut, which in Inuktitut means ‘Nunavik our future’, helps students develop workplace skills relevant to positions in Nunavik institutions, as well as creating a group of culturally-confident Nunavimmiut equipped to lead the political and social future of their region. The program also explores modern issues from an Inuit perspective, providing invaluable insight into Nunavik, its people, and their culture.
The program not only impacts student perseverance at the post-secondary level, but the syllabus is accredited, meaning that all courses successfully passed will count towards any CEGEP diploma a student may want to complete in the future. Courses include Inuit literature, history in Nunavik, Inuktitut, Inuit games, cultural performance and much more.
This August, yet another group of determined students from across Nunavik moved to Montreal to begin their year of studies at Nunavik Sivunitsavut. They were welcomed with orientation activities including visits from esteemed elders Eyuka Pinguatuk from Kangiqsujuaq and Keeneth Deer from the Haudenosaunee Mohawk Nation.
