Sivumuattiit, a student success initiative

Launched in June 2024, Sivumuattiit is a 4-phase strategic planning process. It spans a period of one year and the result will guide our work over the next 5 years. Through inclusive consultations, Sivumuattiit re-imagines ways to support Nunavik students on their path to success.

What does student success mean to you?

Listening

Council of Commissioners
June 2024 (Kuujjuaq)

Sivumuattiit was initiated on the basis of a mandate received by the Kativik Ilisarniliriniq commissioners at their June 2024 meeting in Kuujjuaq.

Recognizing the need for broader consultations within and outside the organization to examine how we go about ensuring student success, the commissioners identified key questions that will guide the “Listening” phase, the first in a 4-phase consultation process.

School administrators (Youth Sector) and backbone service managers
August 1, 2024 (Montreal)

More than 100 Nunavik school administrators and Montreal-based managers gathered together for a day of collective storytelling, discussions and collaboration around the question:

What might Kativik Ilisarniliriniq courageously do to strengthen student success?

The day aimed to create a shared understanding of the Sivumuattiit process and everyone’s role in it. The beginning of a shared vision of student success emerged through discussions of our aspirations for student success, the various profiles of success in our communities and the diversity of the many pathways to success participants testified to.

Ideas on how to maximize community engagement in the upcoming process were also collected, based on participants’ past experiences of successful community outreach efforts. Throughout the day, a shared purpose for Sivumuattiit was co-created, identifying the changes and outcomes that participants hope will result from the process.

Adult Sector
August 27, 2024 (Montreal)

More than 75 employees working with the Adult Education and Vocational Training department in Nunavik and Montreal took part in a one-day working session that brought together managers, professionals, teachers and support staff. Participants engaged with the Sivumuattiit student success initiative, its process and approach.

The proposed activities strengthened relationships within the department and wove an adult education perspective into the student success vision that had emerged from a previous consultation (August 1, Montreal).

Success stories from the journeys of adult education students were harvested, along with pathways to success from teachers and staff. Creative participatory activities brought a new clarity to adult education strengths, challenges, ideas for improvement and staff’s hopes for positive change moving forward.

Youth Sector (backbone services)
September 11, 2024 (Kuujjuaq)

More than 40 employees came together for a one-day working session for Youth Sector staff (backbone services) working with Complementary and Compassionate Services, School Operations and Education Services.

Over the course of the day, participants were introduced to the Sivumuattiit team and to the processes and approaches to be employed during the session. They took part in activities designed to integrate a Youth Sector perspective into the emergent vision of student success. Participants also contributed their own ideas and perspectives to enrich the mapping of student and staff pathways.

The activities led to deep interdepartmental exchanges and knowledge-sharing. Interactive sessions fostered the development of ideas on how to encourage community engagement and promote positive change as we move forward together.

Existing gaps in both student and staff journeys at Kativik Ilisarniliriniq were clearly identified, along with key questions to address at the next consultation. This upcoming session will be held with the staff of Jaanimmarik and Pitakallak Schools, along with the members of the Kuujjuaq community.

Consultation with the staff from Pitakallak and Jaanimmarik Schools
